Leadership and Change Management - Essay Example Leadership development is a complex process as I witnessed over last year and the issues covered by the meetings proved vital in changing my perception of human resource management and how to influence change in the organization structure. The failure to address challenges in the process could be highlighted in the preceding meeting. The process was a complex one although the challenges were diverse. I learned vital issues in change management, which will be addressed later in this reflective analysis. One of the vital issues addressed by the meeting is group cohesion and participation. The participation of individuals in the meeting helped to make the meetings interesting. In fact, the availability of the group members ensured that the objectives of the meeting were met. The individual performance of the group members ensured that all the vital issues in management were handled perfectly and even resolved amicably. The delegation of duties to the individual made the tasks easy to co mplete (Paton, Paton, & McCalman, 2008, p. 56). I learned from the process the vital nature of communication when handling human labor or education members. It was not easy to establish the code of practice among the members, but we were able to work due to mutual trust and cohesion. The change management strategy and collective responsibility are essential issues on the addressing of change within the organization such as the development of leadership skills and experience. As the meeting progressed, several issues could be raised that needed to be solved by the group members. Planning for the meeting was left to the chair-lady because she was the facilitator of the meeting and could handle leadership issues effectively. Under her leadership, several issues were addressed and the issues include the role of every group member. Through the development of group cohesion, she ensured that the group could operate better than expected. The resistance to change was evident within the grou p during the initial stages of operation. This indicated the power of inertia and the role of perception in trying to reach and change an established system (Okbor, 2001, p. 23). The planning of the meeting was perfect and led to the effective completion of the project and attainment of the set goals and objectives of the study. The planning of the ideas or themes to be discussed during the meeting was done by the chair lady with the support from the group members. The group used consensus building in the development of a meeting planner and the issues to be addressed by the group. It was not easy to resolve certain issues in the first meeting. Such vital issues were deferred and were addressed in the later meetings including the third meeting (Lusardi, 2012, p. 89). However, after the completion of the planning process, it was easier to develop and come up with the necessary plan of the meetings throughout the year. The direction and facilitation of the meeting were left to the cha ir-lady and the group members were in charge of the participation. The participation of the various members was monitored by the facilitator who recommended a plan of action, which included the probing of the group members and evaluating their understanding of the concepts discussed through the meetings.

Gene's Development in John Knowles' A Separate Peace Throughout life, there is always a person who one strives to beat, be better than or rise above. Little does each of them know that in the end the two actually make each other stronger. In John Knowles' novel, A Separate Peace (1959), he addresses just this. The novel, told from Gene Forrester's point of view, is based on a friendship and rivalry between him and his friend, Finny, during World War II. The two sixteen year olds attend Devon School, a private all boys' school, in New Hampshire. Finny, a very athletically talented youngster, continually but unintentionally causes Gene to feel inferior and insignificant, producing inevitable anger and jealousy inside Gene. During their summer session in 1942, the boys form a Super Suicide Society; anyone wanting to join the group is required to jump from a specific tree into the running river below. On one particular night, Finny tears the irritated Gene away from his studies for no reason other than to make a plunge from the tree. After arriving at the river, the two creep out on one of the tree's limbs. Balancing as if they were on a tightrope, Gene gives a quick little bounce to the limb, causing Finny to plummet to the riverbank below, severely breaking his leg. No one is aware of Gene's intentional bounce of the tree limb, encouraged by his resentment toward Finny. Gene's jealous action causes Finny's life to change forever. Ethical issues regarding stem cell research Essay One of the recent significant breakthroughs in the field of biomedicine is the discovery, isolation and the ultimate culturing of stem cells from human embryos. The stem cells which are isolated form embryos are unique in that they are able to self renew and still retain capacity to differentiate too many forms of tissue cells. Cultured embryonic stem cells also have the potential of being developed to make regenerative medicine which can be used to treat fatal or debilitating conditions which while treated with normal prescriptions they are not curable. The embryonic stem cells are also capable of prolonging lives of individuals. Despite their potential to cure otherwise incurable diseases and to prolong lives, this discovery has led to questions regarding the value of life. While harvesting or extracting the embryonic stem cells, there are high possibilities of destroying the embryos thus bringing to an end possible human life. The question which arises is whether the lives of these possible human lives should be sacrificed for the improvement of the already existing human beings (Mcgee Caplan, para 2-3). Ethical issues regarding stem cell research One of the major ethical dilemmas facing the embryonic research is the tension created between two moral principles which are highly esteemed. One of the moral principles entails prevention and also alleviation of pain and suffering while the other principle highly regards the value of life. Moral ethics requires people to respect and value human life and also to eliminate pain or possibilities of suffering in individuals. During extraction of embryonic stem cells, there are high possibilities of destroying the embryo thus destroying a possible life. However, such activities have the potential of alleviating pain and curing some of the diseases which are terminal. As such, embryonic stem cells fulfill the moral principle of alleviating and improving the medical conditions of individuals (Rickard, Para 5). However, despite the above possible advantages, destruction of embryos during stem cells harvesting is a violation of the second moral principle which deals with the value of human life. As noted earlier, embryos harvesting results in their destruction thus destruction of life. Life is said to begin when fertilization takes place thus embryos are living things and thus destroying them would amount to destruction of life or devaluation of the value of life. The two moral principles cannot be respected simultaneously as fulfilling one would amount to violation of the other. This raises a conflict as to which principle should be given more weight. Should improvement of and alleviation of suffering be considered first thus permit stem cell research which is destructive or should this research be prohibited due to its destructive nature and violation of the value of human life? This is a major ethical issue which faces this research and which has led to sharp differences in the biomedical field (Shapiro, para 7). Another ethical issue surrounding the stem cell research is based on the intention behind the creation of embryos. Ethics is mainly based or evaluated in terms of the motive and intention behind an action. People opposed to stem cell research argue that it should only be permissible to create embryos if they are meant for reproductive purposes. Creating embryos only to be destroyed for research purposes is impermissible as this would lead to intentional destruction of human life. However, researchers argue that while they create embryos for reproductive functions, they create them in excess and most of them are just discarded. As such, instead of discarding them, such embryos can be used for research and also to help in the formation of medicine for the terminal illnesses. Ethical issues arise between the significance of creation of embryos for reproduction versus for research purposes (Gruen, Grabel Singer, pp 134). Viability of embryos debates also raises some ethical issues concerning the stem cell research. The viability of embryos is based on the notion that some embryos though they develop, they do not develop to certain stages and thus are only discarded. As such, they should be used to alleviate, alleviate and improve the lives of already existing human beings. Embryos after they are created awaiting reproduction, they develop to certain stages after which they can only be discarded if taken up for reproduction functions. Instead of discarding them, some researchers argue that they should be used for research purposes which would yield more benefits. Ethical questions however arise as to whether researchers would not deliberately create more embryos than required to use them for their research in the name of their non viability (Williams, Johnson, para 9). Conclusion Stem cell research has led to controversial debates which are based on the ethical and moral issues regarding life and its value. While some people feel that this research should be used to help in developing medicine for alleviating suffering to terminally ill individuals, others feel that allowing this research would only lead to destruction of possible human life. However, the question of the embryos which are discarded after they become non viable for production purposes also arises. Moral judgment on whether non viable embryos should be discarded instead of being used for research which could be of greater impact forms a major debate. Tora! Tora! Tora! | Historical Errors The movie Tora! Tora! Tora! Was meant to be a historically accurate movie but the movie had mistakes in it. Several factor mainly this movie being about the Japanese made me choose it. The Director Richard Fleischer came to making this film in kind of a weird way. Tora! Tora! Tora! Doesnt show any real bias toward the Japanese or the American sides. The film did a great job in the way reflect the time period in which it was made. This movie had a bunch of factual errors in it for being a historical movie. I think the thing that the Author Richard Fleischer was trying to prove was that the director was trying to show a real actuate idea of what happened in Pearl harbor without any Opinion getting in the way. The film starts with Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto being appointed to command the Japanese First Fleet and Admiral Husband E. Kimmel to be in command the United States Pacific Fleet located in Pearl Harbor. There are alternating scenes between events in Japan, Hawaii and Washington D.C. The scenes with the Japanese are spoken in Japanese and have English sub-titles. In the begging there are scenes that show a lot of Tension between the US and Japanese Military. While W Tensions rise between the two countries and the two sides are finding no diplomatic solution war with the U.S. becomes inevitable Admiral Yamamoto makes attack plans in an event that the Japanese Armys leaders prevail. At the same time U.S. military strategists and intelligence monitor Japanese military activity and communications, trying to predict Japans future plans. Later in the film, the Japanese Navys strategy and plans of the are being intercepted by a large number of officers the American military in Hawaii and the politicians and the secret service men in Washington D.C. When the Japanese fleet sails towards Hawaii, they receive a message called Climb Mt. Niitaka, which authorizes the attack to proceed. In Hawaii Kimmel gives orders to his aircraft carriers to go out to sea in order to prepare for Japanese fleet movements in the Pacific. Kimmel decides to leave all of the slower battleships in Pearl Harbor. On December 7, 1941 before dawn the Japanese launch their attack from six carriers northwest of Oahu. When the sun rises over the Hawaiian Islands the Japanese air commander gives the felt a message Tora, Tora, Tora which meant that no U.S. air support has noticed and that the American fleet knows nothing of the upcoming ambush. There were several reasons why I chose this movie. One of them was that it had to do With Japanese things and I like Japanese things. The fact that this film is made by an American person and a Japanese person made it interesting to me. Also the fact that I wanted to get an idea of what happened in Pearl Harbor. These things made me choose my movie. The Director Richard Fleischer came to making this film in kind of a weird way. At first he wanted to make a documentary of Hitler and Nazi Germany. And then he took at Japan but he knew very little about Japan and how it worked. So he started researching about Japan and became fascinated by their culture. So he decided that he was going to make a documentary about Japan. This Documentary won an Academy award for the best feature film of the year. After that He made another Film on Japan with Elmo Williams that he was proud of. So after that he worked with some Japanese film director to make Tora! Tora! Tora! This film was made in a weird way by Richard Fleischer.( Fleshicer, Richard) This Movie really doesnt show any bias to the Japanese or the Americans. The main reason for this is that the Japanese part where made by a Japanese film director and the American parts were made by Richard Fleisher, so there was no bias of either side. Also bloth directors where only showing their own country so there wouldnt be one directors opinion getting in the part of the other county. Also both film directors tried to make the film as historically accurate as possible so there wasnt any option in the movie. Tora! Tora! Tora! Doesnt have bias view points in either the American parts. Or the Japanese parts. The film does a great job in the way reflect the time period in which it was made. Most of the things such as the type writer room, the way the people dressed, and the war things like plans and battle ships where all correct. They were off on a couple things like the angled run ways ever were there they only had the straight ones back then. So for the most part they got the things that happen back then right with a few mistakes. This movie had a ton of factual errors in it. In one of the scenes there was a damaged B-17 bomber that had a zero on its tail and the tower told it to go around. This would happen because a B-17 cant out run a zero, he would have just landed and get the hell out there as fast as possible. Another Mistake was that the first time you see Washington DC one of the building is the Museum of American history, this wasnt built until 1959. Another one like I said before was that the since with the Japanese fighter taking off on the angled deck. During the war they only had straight decks the angled one didnt come until after the war. Then there was the time where the when the Japanese planes arrived at Hawaii. They flew into the mountainous area near Schofield Barracks. Problem was that there was a white cross memorial that identifies the location of first appearance of the Japanese planes on Oahu. (Snadys, Jon) Obviously it couldnt have been there during the attack. Also with the since with the Japanese sub and the American destroyer the destroyer show was a much newer one the real one was one back from World War One. One other mistake is that the radar show in movie at Ahou point was not the right one. The real was a newly devolved scr-270. When the Japanese planes where taking off there were a bunch of different planes such as the Zero, Kate, and Val but the only planes deployed at first where the Zeros and then the other planes took off.( Westerman , Olav). Another Mistake is when Yamamoto is Another error is that some of the Japanese bombers are seen with only a pilot when they would also have a gunner and a radio operator. he is wearing bars like American officers when Japanese officers wear medals. Before the attack the bugler blows a correct call but in the real life the flag must be raised before the bugler blows. Also during the attack Doris Miller was on the USS West Virginia during the attack but in the movie he was on the USS Arizona. (Myserty Of Pearl Harbor) Another error is that some of the Japanese bombers are seen with only a pilot when they would also have a gunner and a radio operator. In the movie there was very little some compared to the real attack. Also the since where the b-17 bomber had trouble landing was wrong during the real attack none of the planes had trouble with their landing gear. During the attack on Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attack a band on the deck that is playing the Star Spangled Banner just plays the song faster, obviously in real life any sane person would stop and man their battle stations. The movie misquoted admiral Yamamoto famous speech about the chances of success with the war with America the movie said If we must, we can raise havoc with them for a year after that, I can guarantee nothing. While in real life he said I can run wild for six months after that, I have no expectation of success. ( iMDb) A movie about Pearl Harbor without opinion or bias was Richard Fleischers goal. Several factors mainly this movie being about the Japanese made this movie my choice. The Director Richard Fleischer came to making this film in kind of a weird way. Tora! Tora! Tora! Didnt really bias opinions toward the Japanese or the American sides. The film did a great job in the way reflect the time period in which it was made. There was a bunch of factual errors in it for being a historical movie.

This cell is slowly deteriorating and losing control of her thoughts. I believe that this room is set up as a self-defense mechanism when the author herself is put into the asylum. She sets this false wall up to protect her from actually becoming insane and the longer she is in there the more the wall paper begins to deteriorate. This finally leads to her defense weakening until she is left with just madness and insanity. All of the characters throughout the story represent real life people with altered roles in her mind. While she is in the mental institute she blends reality with her subconscious, forming this story from events that are happening all around here in the real world.     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   As the reader is introduced to the woman we find her talking about very strange and unusual happenings occurring around her. This nervous condition she refers to can only mean that she is having mental problems and is possibly going insane.   We can infer this because during this time period, the doctors did not state that someone was insane because they had no medical proof. Instead they would just tell the patients that they have a nervous condition, and send them away. She says, â€Å"I always fancy I see people walking in the numerous paths and arbors, but... ...f the bad that is going on in her real life, so she would have a happy place to live. With the collapse of her happy place her defense was gone and she had no protection from her insanity anymore. This caused all of her blocked out thoughts to swarm her mind and turn her completely insane. When the doctor found her, he tried to go in and help her. When the doctor finally got in he fainted because he had made so many positive changes with her and was utterly distressed when he found out that it was all for naught. This woman had made a safety net within her mind so that she would not have to deal with the reality of being in an insane asylum, but in the end everything failed and it seems that what she had been protecting herself from finally conquered her. She was then forced to succumb to her breakdown and realize that she was in the insane asylum for the long run.
