Genes Development in John Knowles A Separate Peace Essays -- Knowles
Gene's Development in John Knowles' A Separate Peace Throughout life, there is always a person who one strives to beat, be better than or rise above. Little does each of them know that in the end the two actually make each other stronger. In John Knowles' novel, A Separate Peace (1959), he addresses just this. The novel, told from Gene Forrester's point of view, is based on a friendship and rivalry between him and his friend, Finny, during World War II. The two sixteen year olds attend Devon School, a private all boys' school, in New Hampshire. Finny, a very athletically talented youngster, continually but unintentionally causes Gene to feel inferior and insignificant, producing inevitable anger and jealousy inside Gene. During their summer session in 1942, the boys form a Super Suicide Society; anyone wanting to join the group is required to jump from a specific tree into the running river below. On one particular night, Finny tears the irritated Gene away from his studies for no reason other than to make a plunge from the tree. After arriving at the river, the two creep out on one of the tree's limbs. Balancing as if they were on a tightrope, Gene gives a quick little bounce to the limb, causing Finny to plummet to the riverbank below, severely breaking his leg. No one is aware of Gene's intentional bounce of the tree limb, encouraged by his resentment toward Finny. Gene's jealous action causes Finny's life to change forever. He feels terrible about what he did but cannot bring himself to tell Finny the truth. Faced with many great challenges, Gene struggles through the remainder of the novel trying to find himself and develop into his own person. The truth about the tree incident is finally revealed shortly after Finny bre... ...now' " (106). That early, snowy morning Finny teaches Gene much more than he will ever learn in a classroom; he teaches Gene the significance and meaning of self-discovery. Throughout A Separate Peace, John Knowles effectively uses his characterization of Finny to teach one of life's greatest lessons. Although at times Gene and Finny appear to be enemies, the tests and challenges Finny presents to Gene actually cause him to blossom, making him a stronger person. Despite Finny's death, his wisdom, courage and actions live on in Gene. Gene learns that throughout life accomplishments that one works for and achieves will provide much more reward than those handed to a person. Many times, the greatest reward is finding one's true self and discovering his or her capabilities. Works Cited Knowles, John. A Separate Peace. New York: Dell Publishing Co., Inc., 1959.

Famous Creative Thinkers in the World Essay
It is said that there is greatness in everybody, and it only requires the right place and time to burst out and bless the world. This planet has been blessed to have amazing people walk among us, and they have revolutionized the way people perceived certain ideologies. Jesus Christ, Leonardo Da Vinci, Martin Luther King, Benjamin Franklin and Voltaire, just to mention a few are accredited to have left a mark in this world. With none claiming to be any special than any other man, they stood out to make this world a more comfortable place to live in during their time. Quentin Tarantino, a film director, actor, producer and screenwriter is one of the great men that the 21st century has been blessed to have. With a creative, innovative and ever awe-inspiring works, Quentin has become a figure in society that many people can look up to. His films are usually characterized by non-linear storylines, a glorification of violence and a satirical subject matter that in most times results in an exhibition of neo-noir characteristics. His creative genius by the use of mix and match genre as well as an infusion of music and the morphing of old works and making them new and better are his main characteristics that define him. Quentinââ¬â¢s works have always had a cut above the rest because they seek to contribute largely to the society in general. Whether in educating, reminding or entertaining the society, Quentin has had movie lovers at the edge of their seats and in turn, he has received awards for the same. Quentin has entertaining movies like Pulp Fict ion (1994) that is considered one of the greatest if not the greatest movie produced of all time and Django Unchained that seeks to tell the story of slavery. Movies with stories that remind human beings of their past, or those that make them forget about the daily hassles of life have garnered him success as well as health, although without their share of problems. For example, making of a slavery movie was initially not favored by potential audiences, and it received severe criticism although it resulted to his highest grossing movie of all time. On the other hand, other movies are criticized as having too much violence which is mostly in his line of creativity. The solutions to these problems were primarily making movies that are entertaining and educative, that leave out the brutality of the times that the movies are based on. The second is that the action movies he directs or produces are made for the enjoyment of the entire family, without vulgar language and sometimes incredible humor. For a creative thinker, obstacles are a daily routine since thinking outside the proverbial box is commonplace. For Quentin, research is the initial step towards a resolute creative thinking process. This means a lot of reading and comparisons of different scripts and different possibilities. Tarantinoââ¬â¢s creative thinking process revolves around all matters that seem reasonable and worth investing in, promoting ideologies and uplifting talented scriptwriters. Although he is attributed to having anger issues, his movies cannot be remade any better without denying the audience their intended purpose. For example, Django Unchained was meant to educate and remind the American of the past that they are too ashamed of to remember. His works fit perfectly in the 21st century movie making field where creativity and the ââ¬Ëanything goesââ¬â¢ attitude is prime. Having been an avid movie fan, a trained actor, movie critique and an investor, Tarantino has continued to expand both h is knowledge and skill in the movie world. The age of computing has revolutionized the 21st century and the world has become a better place with computers. The age of computers, as this century is commonly referred to have experienced profound effect in all industries that have chosen to adopt the technology. Grace Murray Hopper (nicknamed ââ¬Ëamazing Graceââ¬â¢), an American computer scientist as well as the United States navy rear admiral had notable contributions to the world of technology and modern warfare. She is among the pioneer programmers of Harvard Mark one computer, and she developed the first compiler for a computer programming language. This was her first most significant contribution to society. She is also renowned for popularizing the term ââ¬Ëdebuggingââ¬â¢ as a term for fixing computer glitches. It is probably because of her sense of patriotism that she volunteered to join World War II, and she was sworn into the Navy reserve where she gained an exemption to enlist because she was underweight. This was among the first hurdles in her career, but what she did not have in physical attributes; she more than made up for them in brains. Throughout her career in both industry and academia, Hopper was a consultant for the United States Naval Reserve as well as a lecturer there. She held several posts in leadership through her career both outside the Navy and also within the Navy. Her technical and marketing skills proved to be of great use to her as she also demonstrated superb political and general business acumen. The major hurdles that she had to overcome were the computer bugs that she was working on while in Harvard. However, working alongside brilliant minds, she co-authored several papers on computers. By the virtue of patience and perseverance, Hopper was able to tackle many of the problems she faced by herself, but in some, she got the assistance of fellow brilliants. She is said to have never turned down a good idea from anyone regardless of their rank in the military of in the lab. By being involved in the successful programming of Mark I through III computers, she was awarded the Naval Ordnance Development Award. Nothing could have been done any different at the time, and up until now, the Mark computers are still formidable in the market. With the age of computing, Hopperââ¬â¢s works fitted perfectly with her time, and her innovations remain a valuable contribution to human beings. By being involved in the universityââ¬â¢s academic program, Hopper was able to learn and continue to excel in her field of study and expertise. Up until her retirement, she was a lecturer and an academician whose contributions were noted and highly regarded. Until her death in 1992, Hopper remained an invaluable asset for the United States Navy, Harvard and the World at large. For that, the USS Hopper (DDG-70) Navy Destroyer and the Cray XE6 ââ¬Å"Hopperâ⬠supercomputer were named after her in the United States Navy and NERSC respectively. Note taking Content Analysis
My research study is completely based on secondary resources because I have used various books and case laws to support the argument and they are a rich source of citation in legal projects. 1) Library Research a) Analysis of Historical records b) Analysis of documents c) Reference and Abstract Guides d) Note taking Content Analysis 2) Researching through the Internet E-article B) Relevance Of The Topic / Scope And Purpose The project aims to give a brief overview of the corruption and bribery practices undertaken by the public servants and the Indian laws dealing with the problem. The main law, I. . The Prevention of Corruption Act 1988, is discussed in brief and the provisions pertaining to seizure of ill-gotten wealth and asset reinstatement have also been discussed. The problems and challenges faced by the country in fighting these challenges have also been highlighted. C) Research Questions: 0 What is meant by the term economic offences? 0 What are the various types of economic offences? 0 What is the need of having Economic Offences Wing in India? 0 Sectors most vulnerable to corruption and bribery practices 0 What exactly leads to corruption and bribery practices, undertaken by people? What are the various causes of corruption? D) Limitation of the Research: The research study carries with itself a few limitations, like, as it's restricted to the secondary research so, the quality of research is affected as the origins of the information maybe questionable. Secondary research never meets the specific needs of researcher because all those information, data, statistics have already been generated. Hence, I would suggest further researchers to critically evaluate and validate the reliability and credibility of the information gathered. CHAPTER II ââ¬â INTRODUCTIONThe high potential of the domestic market which is driven by Indian's emerging middle class, cost competitiveness and its large talent pool continue to make our country one of the most preferre d destination for investors and businessmen. Despite the such as the United States, India remained stable. In fact, it registered growth in the foreign direct investment (FED)I . It garnered more than 110 % in the areas of telecommunication and chemicals, with a percentage of 103 and 227 respectively. L Now the question that arises is that, in spite of India being economically sound why re we still in a state of poverty? Why majority of our population still dowels in slum area? Why each day lots of children die out of hunger/ starvation? The most probable answer to these questions are the rooted instances of corruption and bribery in our system. The schemes/policies which are announced by the government each year in order to benefit the unprivileged are not being availed by them since there are certain loopholes in the system and the people who are not entitled to them take undue advantage and enjoy them. Corruption real or perceived is having a detrimental effect on our economy. On o ne and it is forcing investors to rethink about their investment in India and on the other hand, it is distorting the function of free and fair market and creating a state of unfair competition. ORIGIN/ HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: The instances of corruption and bribery form a part of our system from a long time. Take for an instances that an early stage of world war II, the Government of India realized that the vast increase in expenditure for war efforts had provided opportunities to both government officials and non-officials, for 1 www. Antistatic. Com indulging in bribery and corruption at the cost of public and the government. It was felt that the police and other law enforcement agencies under the state government were not in a situation to cope up with the situation. An executive order was therefore passed by the Government of India in 1941, setting up the Special police establishment under a DIG in then department of war with mandate to investigate cases of bribery and corrupti on in transaction with which war and supply department of the Government of India was concerned.Corruption has been blamed for the failures of certain developing countries to develop, and recent empirical research confirms a link between higher perceived corruption and lower investment and growth. What is Corruption? Corruption is a result of weak state management and exists when individuals or organizations have monopoly power over a good or service, discretion over making decisions, limited or no accountability, and low level of income. The frequently cited World Bank definition of corruption is the abuse of public office for private gain (World Bank 1997). Corruption not only affects broad macroeconomic variables, such as growth, and investment, but also income distribution. It has been further explained by United Nation Development Program (1997) that corruption increases poverty by creating incentives for higher investment in capital-intensive projects and lower investment in el aborateness's projects. Thus corruption causes poverty and income inequality.WHAT IS BRIBERY? Bribery is an act of giving money or gift that alters the behavior of the recipient, where the gift is of a dishonest nature. Bribery constitutes a crime and is defined by Black law dictionary, as the offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting of any item of value to influence the actions of an official or other person in charge of a public or legal duty. Offering a discount or a full or partial refund to all purchasers of the same kind, quality and quantity of product or service, is a legal rebate, and is not bribery. For example, it is legal for a 7 employee of a Public Utilities Commission involved in electric rate regulation to accept a rebate on electric service that reduces their cost for electricity, when the rebate is available to other residential electric customers. If the rebate was done to influence them to look favorably on the electric utility's rate increase applications, howe ver, that would be bribery, and unlawful. Now both corruption and bribery form a part of economic offences. Since they have decision of potential investors but they hamper the growth of free and fair market practices.Special Acts notified under section 3 of DOSE Act mainly pertaining to serious frauds in Banks, Stock Exchanges, Financial institutions, Joint Stock Companies, Public Limited Companies, misappropriation of public funds, criminal breach of trust, violation of Foreign Exchange Regulation Act, Customs Act, IMMIX Laws, counterfeiting of currency, narcotics, drug trafficking, arms peddling and offences related to antiquities, adulteration, black marketing etc. Www. WORKING OF THE ECONOMIC OFFENCE WING:4 The Economic Offences Division is headed by a Special Director/Additional Director and it consists of four Zones. Each Zone is headed by a Joint Director. Every Zone has two or three Regions each headed by a DIG. Each Region comprises of two or three Branches headed by Superintendents of Police.Out of the four Zones of Economic Offence Division, one of the Zones deals exclusively with large and complicated security and bank frauds. Whats the Deal with Improving Paragraphs SAT Writing Section Guide and Advice
What's the Deal with Improving Paragraphs SAT Writing Section Guide and Advice SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips If youââ¬â¢re not familiar with the design of these questions on every SAT, you should be. Hereââ¬â¢s the scoop on Improving Paragraphs (and, bonus, a quick and dirty guide to acing the SAT Essay)! In this post,weââ¬â¢ll look at what these questions are designed to test, why those skills are important, and, of course, how to easily take the questionsapart on test day. The Problem Education in the U.S. has changed a lot since the SATââ¬â¢s inception in 1926, and so must the test. The skill of writing is a great example of how theyââ¬â¢ve had to do that. Before 2005, the SAT didnââ¬â¢t have any way to measure studentsââ¬â¢ ability to read or write more than a sentence at a time. Many college officials and instructors understandably felt that this was not an ideal way to test college preparedness- most college freshmen are expected to write multiple 5-8 page papers in the first semester. But writing is a complicated process- how to break it down into small, multiple-choice-type questions? One of the ways the College Board came up with was Improving Paragraphs. The Solution Since 2005, one Writing section in each SAT has ended with a question type called Improving Paragraphs. It shows you what it calls ââ¬Å"an early draft of an essay.â⬠It consists of 2-4 paragraphs in which each sentence is numbered. The questions ask you to identify mistakes or make improvements to the paragraphs. Hereââ¬â¢s an example of a question and the sentence it asks about: (6) Although zoologists do not believe that increasing numbers of raptors pose any threat to humans in urban areas, they feel it is important to maintain ongoing surveillance of the main ones where nests are most common. In context, which would best replace the word ââ¬Å"onesâ⬠in sentence 6? (A) raptors (B) objects (C) experiments (D) urban areas (E) hypotheses The Breakdown At PrepScholar, our years of experience teaching at both the high school and college levels makes the purpose of the above question, and others like it, quite clear. In this post, weââ¬â¢re going to share that clarity with you. Weââ¬â¢ll go through some common question types and explain what they're really testing. The Transition Question It asksâ⬠¦ ...which of five sentences would be best to put between two sentences (at the beginning of a paragraph). Itââ¬â¢s really testingâ⬠¦ ...whether you know how to use transitions. Between two paragraphs, either at the end of the first or the beginning of the second, something- usually a whole sentence- should connect the main ideas of the two paragraphs to each other. Wrong answers on the SAT will mention the main idea of only one, or neither, of the paragraphs concerned. It addresses the problemâ⬠¦ ...that many students just donââ¬â¢t use transitions in their writing, accidentally taking the reader on a confusing, bumpy ride. But the SAT canââ¬â¢t ask ââ¬Å"does this need a transition?â⬠because there would only be 2 answers: yes and no. They also canââ¬â¢t ask you to write a transition yourself, since someone would then have to read it. The only option is to give you one appropriate transition and four much less appropriate sentences, and make you find the right one. The Addition Question It asks... ...which of five sentences would be best to insert into the essay at a certain point. Itââ¬â¢s really testingâ⬠¦ ...whether you understand how to organize an essay. It addresses the problemâ⬠¦ ...that students sometimes skip linking information in their thought processes. The first sentence says something about a movie star being courageous. The one after it in the passage, which would go after the sentence we choose as the answer to this question, mentions an outcome that applies to both the movie star and the narrator. The correct answer is a direct comparison between the two- without it, the paragraph is a bit weird, but not confusing. These are difficult because theyââ¬â¢re subtle, but the idea is the same as #30: which sentence best connects the sentences that go before and after it? The Wording Question It asksâ⬠¦ ...which of five words or phrases would be best to replace another word. Itââ¬â¢s really testingâ⬠¦ ...whether you know how to be specific. It addresses the problemâ⬠¦ ...that students are often (read: almost always) far too vague in their writing, both in high school and college, because itââ¬â¢s easier to be vague. The essay is where the SAT tries to test this the most stringently, but they kind of take a stab at it here, too. Because the SAT has to come up with five answers, the words (or phrases) in these kinds of questions are usually extremely vague, like ââ¬Å"things,â⬠ââ¬Å"ideas,â⬠or ââ¬Å"groups.â⬠Then you have to figure out, based on context, what that vague word or phrase means more specifically. The answers, for example, might be similar nouns with different adjectives attached to them, and you have to decide which adjective would fit best with the surrounding sentences. The Main Idea Question It asks... ...about the purpose of a paragraph. Itââ¬â¢s really testingâ⬠¦ ...whether you understand the meaning in context of some chunk of writing. It addresses the problemâ⬠¦ ...that many students donââ¬â¢t read deeply enough to understand how an authorââ¬â¢s use of an example or story fits into his or her overall point. Most academic texts donââ¬â¢t start with a main idea like, ââ¬Å"Cities have too much sprawl; it should be reduced.â⬠Instead, they say something like ââ¬Å"The strip malls designed to serve residents of new housing developments in many suburbs are not suitable replacements for historic districts or unique, local culture.â⬠It could be argued that the first statement is clearer and thus better, but many of the works youââ¬â¢ll read in college will be even less clear than the second statement above, so the SAT tries to test your ability to see through the nonsense to the authorââ¬â¢s point. The PhrasingQuestion It asks... ...you to revise half of a sentence. Itââ¬â¢s really testingâ⬠¦ ...whether you know how to be concise. It addresses the problemâ⬠¦ ...that students use more words than they need to in communicating their points. Most of the revision questions in Improving Paragraphs are about conciseness; thatââ¬â¢s why itââ¬â¢s called Improving Paragraphs and not Fixing Errors That Happen to Be in Paragraphs. Sometimes, however, they test appropriateness in context- for example, if two sentences contrast, the second needs to start with a word or phrase that indicates that contrast, e.g. ââ¬Å"However,â⬠ââ¬Å"On the other hand,â⬠or ââ¬Å"Others believe thatâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ The Deletion Question It asks... ...which sentence should be deleted. Itââ¬â¢s really testingâ⬠¦ ...whether you can eliminate irrelevant information. It addresses the problemâ⬠¦ ...of fluff, i.e. filler writing that doesnââ¬â¢t help develop the point of the essay. Students at both the high school and college levels tend to include irrelevant details in their writing. Nobody knows what leads to this mysterious phenomenon, but enough of it can make an essay sound like nonsense. The question is, which sentence has the least to do with the essay as a whole? (If the sentence is related to the essay, but a different part than where it is, theyââ¬â¢ll usually ask you to move it rather than delete it.) Bonus Time: Improving Paragraphs is Useful for the Essay Too And hereââ¬â¢s your prize for reading all the way to the end! The underlined phrases above (and below) comprise a concise set of guidelines for the SAT essay (and, really, most essays). Use transitions: the joints between paragraphs are the places readers read first. Make sure you move smoothly from one idea to the next. Organize: keep like ideas together and donââ¬â¢t repeat yourself. Be specific: as much as possible, use concrete names, places, and dates; instead of ââ¬Ëgreatââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëterrible,ââ¬â¢ use specific adjectives like ââ¬Ëprogressiveââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëdestructive.ââ¬â¢ Use examples and stories: rather than hypothetical, ââ¬Å"what-ifâ⬠scenarios, you can invent situations and events to illustrate your point, so do it! Be concise: cut the fluff, it doesnââ¬â¢t add to your essay, and the readers see it as repetition, which hurts your score. Avoid irrelevant information: this is also tied to organization; give only examples that really drive home your point, not things that ââ¬Ëkind ofââ¬â¢ show what you mean. The CPAG web log besides reported that by the age of 16, kids having free repasts at school achieve 1.7 classs lower at GCSE than their wealthier equals ; they leave school with lower makings which in bend lead to lower net incomes over the class of a working life clip and it has besides been projected that 4.7 million kids will be populating in poorness by 2020.I personally find these figures shocking and saddening and I believe that while the authorities has a duty to her people, companies and single members of the society all have a function to play if we are to undertake this issue efficaciously.Additions in the figure of individual female parents or parent, unplanned gestations, teenage gestations are some of the implicit in causes of child poorness. Adolescents ( childs who think they are grownups and matured plenty to do major determinations, experience it is their God- given right to be rebellious and can barely take attention of themselves ) should non be holding kids. These adolescents need to be sexually educated, encouraged to acquire involved in profitable activities that will open their heads and spread out their skylines so they can tap into their full potency. This is non to state that sometimes these childs would non derail from the right way. This is where holding a strong household unit comes into drama. If and when they do, they need to be supported emotionally, physically, financially particularly by household.Companies ( minor, major, multi- national ) should besides be involved. These companies should hold a societal duty to the community in which they are runing. Having support groups, organizing runs, doing regular contributions in hard currency and in sort and making consciousness will do. The authorities should non be less concerned. She has a responsibility to supply basic comfortss, profitable occupations and benefits construction that will actuate and animate her people.Childs are gifts that should be cherished. They should non be born to endure and populate in poorness. They need to be nurtured in love because they are after all-OURhereafter.

Strategy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Strategy - Essay Example Then in 1998 it further modified with its ââ¬ËTwo transformationââ¬â¢ strategy which basically meant shifting from a mainly global shipping industry into a global logistics carrier and also, from a cross-border company to a multinational conglomerate (Zhang, Liu and Lorange, p.745). The path that the company has taken has revolutionized the way it has achieved success but this did not come as an easy task, instead this is most apparent in its diversity of operations that almost seem impractical. From a shipping carrier, it has verged into other allied enterprises such as international shipping, terminal operations, shipbuilding and repair and logistics. But aside from this, they also have interests in unrelated undertakings like banking, financing and others. This multiplicity has mostly been possible because of its characteristics as a state-owned enterprise. It would be more practicable as a measure of system integration for COSCO to delineate its focus on its core businesses in convergence with allied ventures. As it is, COSCO is standing resembling something almost near to a deck of cards with billions at stake in its numerous operations. To receive optimum result, each sector must be integrated to the others by forming a network of sub-entities coming together through the core objectives that distinctly makes it within the ambit of the COSCO brand. This poses somewhat a difficulty in the current number of networks within the vast corporation but this is a necessity to secure the sustainability of the corporation that it will not only be able to overcome the cyclical pattern of industry one step at a time but also to create a highly sustainable customized strategy to its own benefit towards further and perpetual
